Construction of Cruth Curach

As part of the Open House Dublin festival, Nspace were asked to construct this stunning pieve of artwork, which is a fusion of architecture and traditional boatbuilding.

The piece, entitled Cruth Curach, is the result of Craftitecture: a design competition run by the Crafts Council of Ireland and the Irish Architecture Foundation to celebrate Ireland’s Year of Craft. Using the form of currachs, the pavilion moves on horizontal and vertical axes to form an open space when in use and a sculptural form when closed. The pavilion is conceived by Bucholz McEvoy Architects and Jim Horgan, master boat builder.

Nspace constructed the project both off-site, and on-site in Merrion Square Dublin.

Construction of ‘No Man’s Land’ video

Here you can see a video showing the creation of No Man’s Land for Fergal McCarthy.  we kept a picture diary every day, to document the work and keep as a momento.

If we had used all the pictures, the video would have turned out to be 17 minutes long, so here you will see an edited selection of shots.

To view more pictures, have a look at our Facebook page.

No Man’s Land completed

The finished project moored in it’s new home, ready for Artist Fergal Mc Carthy to move in.
We worked late into the night to make sure every grain of sand was in place, and all the anchoring and moorings were up to the job of holding No Man’s Land in place during a hurricane.

Over the new few posts, we will document the construction of the Island for Fergal, who is now in residence in the middle of the Liffey.

Building an Island in the Liffey

Buiding a Desert Island in the middle of the liffey requires solid planning, a can-do builder with plenty of Nautical know how, and a vision to see out of the box.

Starting with solid plans for the structure

That is where Nspace fit the bill perfectly, and were the perfect choice for Artist Fergal McCarthy, when planning his next ambitious project entitled ‘No mans land.’
